In this closing section, I shall not seek to show that ‘naturalism’ is true; for that purpose, it is not clear enough what naturalism is supposed to be. Part of the reason for this is that there do not appear actually to be any self-confessed naturalists among moral philosophers; and the untenability of naturalism has seemed, at least until quite recently, so very evident that its critics have not thought it worth while to set out in great detail the doctrine they have so regularly rejected. Accordingly I think that the most profitable proceeding will be briefly to review some characteristic anti-naturalistic tenets, and to consider what follows from those, if any, which seem to be sound.
