Meiosis, Chromosomes, and Genes
Mitosis is not the only type of division that can occur in plant and animal cells. A second type is found in specialized cells of both plants and animals. In this second type of nuclear division, termed meiosis, the chromosomes are not divided so that each daughter nucleus has the same number of chromosomes as the original cell, as in mitosis. Instead they are reduced in number so that each daughter nucleus receives precisely one-half of the original number of chromosomes.
