Abstract
Man’s imagination has always been captivated by the thought of unexplored worlds, of lands and planets other than our own. The cell is a wonderful world discovered almost three hundred years ago and still but partially explored. This is the world—a complex, fascinating, and often beautiful world—that will be considered in this volume. The major aim will be to examine the cell and its parts as a combination of form and function. We will first consider the development of knowledge about the cell.
