In many respects 1957 was a watershed in post-war Labour Party history. This was the year that witnessed both the publication and acceptance of Industry and Society and the overwhelming rejection of unilateralism. It was also the year that saw the reconciliation between Gaitskell and Bevan or, more precisely, the abdication by the latter from the challenge to Gaitskell’s leadership of the Party.
