Abstract

Others will hammer out softly breathing bronzes, I can well believe, and will draw living faces from marble. They will plead causes better, and trace with the measuring-rod the motions of the sky, and tell the risings of the stars. Do thou, Roman, remember to rule the peoples with lawful power—these shall be thy arts—and to impose the habit of peace, to spare the conquered and to subdue the proud by war.
