Nation of softies?

Part of the The Nation Today book series

Abstract

There are people who think we are a nation without backbone now that we are all so heavily insured against suffering. If we had to work to avoid starving then the country’s economic difficulties would be solved in a trice. If the ruthless law of the jungle applied to men, too, then the old and the sick would die off and only the fit would be left to consume the products of their own labour and ensure themselves a high standard of living.
