When the Welfare State started there were many people who thought it would mean the end of voluntary service, of people helping others for no reward other than the feeling that they were being of service. It is an odd feeling, ‘being of service’, but one that has driven countless people to care for less-fortunate neighbours since the days of the Good Samaritan.
