Abstract

The Turks had at one time been a vigorous and progressive people whose power had threatened all Europe. They were checked at Vienna in 1529, just as an earlier Islamic threat had been stopped by the Franks near Poitiers, and after Suleiman (1520–1566) some of the signs of later Turkish decadence already began to make their appearance.
