Abstract

The analysis in Chapters 5 and 6 is often sufficient to enable the designer to calculate the stresses in the basic shell of a pressure vessel, but in many cases it must be supplemented by a knowledge of the behaviour of cones, toroids, ellipsoids, etc. These shapes of shell are usually employed as transition pieces or end closures and because they introduce a rapid change of shape they are often highly stressed.
