The Political Background: a Survey of the Wards

  • G. W. Jones

Abstract

BETWEEN 1896 and 1964 the boundaries of the wards were altered twice, in 1927 and 1958, but on both occasions most of the wards retained their essential characteristics. Thus it is possible to examine each ward over the whole period to reveal its economic and social composition, its voting behaviour and the types of Councillor it sent to the Town Hall.1 The reorganisation in 1966 completely altered the wards, and the description which follows deals with the wards only up to their demise in 1966.
