Radical Empiricism

In the preface which James wrote in 1909 for his collection of essays entitled The Meaning of Truth, he explains that the reason why he attaches importance to the pragmatic theory of truth is that it lends strong support to the doctrine of radical empiricism; and it is in this doctrine that his interest lies. ‘Radical empiricism’, he continues, ‘consists first of a postulate, next of a statement of fact, and finally of a generalized conclusion.
