Abstract

To understand the Revolution of 1399, with all its consequences for the century after it—deposition of a rightful king, insecurity of tenure of the throne by his successors, dynastic wars, constant domestic turmoil—we have to portray the character and the reign of Richard II, of which the revolution was both consequence and culmination.
