The Bishop as Pastor
Gregory the Great (540–604), was born of a Roman patrician family somewhat before the middle of the sixth century. His early life, therefore, was passed during a period of exceptional turbulence in the Italian peninsula. Nevertheless, Gregory seems to have received a good education according to the standards of the day. Although he was certainly not a classical scholar in the old sense, and he knew no Greek, he was literate and well versed in Scripture. In all his manifold activities he showed a remarkable common sense.
