Abstract
The immense significance, both economic and social, of the steam engine has been examined in Chapters 3 and 7. Its share in revolutionising both the economic organisation of the country and the life of its people was further extended when the combined efforts of a group of engineers in the early nineteenth century succeeded in adapting it to provide a source of motive power for railways.
