Abstract
The demographic history of twentieth-century Britain contrasts sharply with that of the nineteenth century. As Chapter 14, section 1 showed, the fast rate of growth which had characterised most of the nineteenth century was already beginning to decline towards the end of the century. The new, slower rate of about 1 per cent a year achieved by the first decade of the twentieth century was, however, reduced still further by the interwar decades.
