Abstract
The air cushion vehicle, or hovercraft, has the unique ability of travelling with equal ease over water, land or ice at speeds of up to 80 m.p.h. Its military value is accepted and its commercial development is being energetically pursued. Large hovercraft started operating ferry services between Britain and France in the summer of 1968. Track-riding versions of the hovercraft are also being developed as replacements for the conventional railway; they promise speeds of up to 300 m.p.h.
