Cemented tungsten carbide, developed in the second decade of this century in Germany, is a most versatile and useful new material. An extremely tough alloy, it is composed of tungsten carbide grains and a binder, usually of cobalt. It is used extensively for dies, for machine-tool cutting edges and for many sorts of wear and corrosion-resistant parts. Its discovery has aided the machine-tool industry, since tools equipped with cemented tungsten carbide cutting edges can cut metals at very high speeds.
