Abstract
Experiments were made with various forms of power assistance for the steering of vehicles in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, but it was not until the introduction of the heavy lorry and bus in the early 1920’s that a real need arose to reduce the exertion involved in manual steering. Mechanical, vacuum, com- pressed-air and hydraulic systems were all tried in the late 1920’s and early 1930’s; hydraulic systems were those generally adopted.
