Chapter
Part of the Palgrave Studies in the History of Childhood book series (PSHC)

Abstract

Chapter 1 frames the research objectives of the book. It identifies and defines the children that feature, particularly focusing on the complex issues of what constituted a child in the nineteenth century. Following this discussion, the chapter introduces the five asylums that are included as well as outlining the fluid ideas surrounding insanity during the period. It then explores historiographical arguments dealing with the purpose and function of asylums and the place of children within them.
