Abstract

The production side of the industry picks up on the pervasiveness of technological advances. As new technology diffuses across the domestic and global industry, production with increasing returns is realized. We see competition among dominant firms such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Books-a-Million. As expected, these large firms prevent their competitors from instituting policies that would cut into their market share. The book industry will not disappear—humanity would not survive without the written word. However, it remains to be seen what form those words will take. The structure of the book industry will continue to evolve along with the technologies that shape it and propel it forward.
