Abstract

The smartphone is, many suggest, a revolutionary device that has changed the world—especially the Apple iPhone, which is the most important smartphone. There are, it turns out, more than 2500 different models of smartphones, 2 millions apps that can be used on them, and almost 7 billion smartphones in use. A new development in smartphone design, the phablet, which is a large smartphone that is also around the same size as a small tablet, is discussed. Then the idea of psychoanalyst Erik Erikson are used to help explain why smartphones play such an important role in the lives of teenagers. This is followed by a discussion of some of the negative effects of smartphone use and the desire, many smartphone users have, to wait for “the next big thing” in smartphones before upgrading to new smartphones.
