Cyclothymia is a mild form of bipolar disorder characterized by mood swings. Cyclothymics can feel on top of the world for a period of time, followed by a period when they feel low. In between times they can be stable and well. Their emotional ups and downs are not as extreme as those of people who suffer from full-fledged manic depression, whose mood swings can be much more devastating and long-lasting. However, this doesn’t mean that cyclothymic behavior has no consequences. This leadership style can end in career derailment, job loss, estrangement from friends and family members, major financial problems, drug abuse, alcoholism, hospitalization, and even suicide attempts. There is generally less awareness of cyclothymia than of the more dramatic bipolar disorder.
