Abstract

Programs at business schools, particularly those aimed at experienced managers, are positioned more and more as change-making opportunities for executives. Completing such a program is portrayed as a special kind of experience that goes beyond the purely academic exercise of mastering theories or learning about management tools. Many programs aimed at executives are described as “transitional,” “career and life changing,” or “transformational.” Ironically, however, regardless of glossy brochures and flashy media advertisements, research on how such transformation is achieved and what needs to be done to increase the chances of successful change has only started to be substantially advanced in the last decade.
