Abstract
In reading this revised version of a journal article that appeared several years ago, it is important to keep in mind that it was written well before executive coaching entered the imagination, let alone common practice, of organizational leaders. However, we considered it important to include a chapter written by one of the founders of the clinical orientation to management (to whose memory we have dedicated this second edition of Coach and Couch). After devoting most of this book to an exploration of the clinical approach, we thought it useful to remind readers to pay attention to the dangers implicit in dealing with unconscious phenomena.
