While Chapter 2 discussed the modes of response that can be observed by looking at how firms have responded to environmental challenges in the past, Chapter 4 considers the strategic options open to business going forward. At the heart of the options is the degree to which business chooses to comply with legislation or do more than the law requires based on an evaluation of the strategic issues raised in Chapter 3. Six strategic options are explored as follows:
  • Take the low road.

  • Break the law.

  • Wait and see.

  • Show and tell.

  • Pay for principal.

  • Think ahead.
