Abstract

It is a well-known fact that population statistics are one of the oldest and most reliable type of official statistics. Population censuses have been conducted in growing numbers since the eighteenth century (of course, the history of census-taking is much older), but the first modern census in the sense of being based on scientific criteria and the principle of self-enumeration was carried out in Belgium in 1846.
