In the Preface I noted that despite the occasional recognition that Blade Runner is a thought-provoking film, its potential for eliciting and exploring philosophical issues had so far not been fully appreciated. I have attempted to remedy that situation by examining how issues of universal human concern arise and are addressed within the film. I have argued not only that the film raises philosophical questions, but also that it suggests answers to at least some of them. I do not expect to have convinced the reader of all my specific interpretations and conclusions. But I do hope to have convinced the reader that Blade Runner is, indeed, ‘a philosophical film.’1
