Abstract
In this chapter I introduce three theoretical concepts that run throughout this book: the concepts of power, resistance and legal pluralism. My aim is to introduce these concepts to those coming to this book from other areas of specialism and, for those already familiar with these concepts, to demonstrate how they enrich our understanding of change within cultural minorities. Together the three concepts provide a fertile basis on which to examine a fundamental question that haunts every study of micro-resistance: how do we conceptualize the resisting subject as both culturally constituted and yet free to challenge cultural precepts?
