Abstract

This chapter expresses my view of the new characteristics which are emerging on the part of the earth’s surface that used to be called the Soviet Union. The disintegration of the Soviet Union was inevitable. It was caused by the fact that its totalitarian structure was incapable of prolonged survival, given the economic structure that had been provided. The first, timid attempt to change this economic framework was carried out under Alexei Kosygin. But it would be more accurate to say that change was never implemented: there was only the hope that this would be done. And not a single thought was ever given to changing the political essence of the state.
