The three classic Russian-speaking radio broadcasters—BBC, Radio Liberty, and Voice of America (VOA)—have often played a crucial role during the turbulent postwar decades, mainly due to their influence within the political and cultural elite of the USSR. However, during the three days of the August 1991 coup attempt, their impact spread across all social strata and acquired critical importance.
