Abstract
Max Perutz, the person responsible for bringing Watson and Crick together and giving them the freedom to develop their ideas, died in Cambridge at the age of 88 on 6 February 2002, after a distinguished career uncovering the secrets of proteins through structure. He had already begun to enjoy early success when Crick and Watson joined him at his new MRC unit within the Cavendish Laboratory.
