In the early 1970s—as perhaps a decade before that—it was possible to argue, as many (including this writer) did, that the Philippines would prosper more than Thailand in the ensuing years. Thailand had endured an indolent dictatorship for over a decade, it was nearer the Vietnamese fires, and it had at least the beginnings of a serious insurgency.
