Attitudes toward European Integration and NATO in Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ukraine
This chapter examines the determinants of support for integration into the European Union (EU) by citizens in Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ukraine. It asks the following questions: Do individuals’ attitudes regarding NATO membership build support for the enlargement of the EU? That is, can positive or negative experience with one international organization provide a reservoir of “good will” (Easton 1975) for another international organization? Although some analyses posit that NATO membership provides a positive reservoir for EU expansion (Kostadinova 2000), we know surprisingly little about this linkage.
