Editing as a Theoretical Pursuit

  • Jerome McGann

Abstract

In a trenchant metatheoretical essay, Lee Patterson investigates what he calls “The Kane-Donaldson Piers Plowman,” that is to say, the 1975 Athlone Press edition of the poem’s so-called B Text. 1 say “metatheoretical” because the edition itself constitutes the primary theoretical event. Patterson’s essay elucidates the theory of that extraordinary work of scholarship.
