Abstract

The Spanish Civil War began in July 1936 when a group of military commanders led by General Franco, resentful of the growing socialist and anti-clerical tendencies of the Republican Government, organised a revolt against it. Spain at once became an ideological battleground for fascists and socialists from many different nations, with the USSR supporting the Republic and Germany and Italy supporting the insurgents. Opponents of fascism organised an International Brigade to defend the Republic and this was involved in heavy fighting throughout the war.
