Homage to Catalonia
The Spanish Civil War began in July 1936 when a group of military commanders led by General Franco, resentful of the growing socialist and anti-clerical tendencies of the Republican Government, organised a revolt against it. Opponents of fascism organised an International Brigade to defend the Republic and this was involved in heavy fighting throughout the war.
