I began teaching the material that became Reading Alcoholisms: Theorizing Character and Narrative in Selected Novels of Thomas Hardy, James Joyce, and Virginia Woolf in the mid-1980s while working at several Northeastern liberal arts colleges. After two students at one college died within two weeks of each other in alcohol-induced accidents, I became determined to use classroom discussion about novels to demythologize alcohol use.
