Stories of Unity

  • Drucilla Cornell

The first interviews with the women of Unity were conducted by Constanza Morales-Mair and myself during the months of May and June 2000. That summer, Constanza translated the three interviews that were given in Spanish. Dinh Tran, my assistant at the Rutgers Law School, transcribed the tapes of the two interviews that were given in English. The drafts were then handed over to the women of Unity for them to revise and add any necessary corrections. Antonieta chose to rewrite her own interview and Mónica Díaz, the administrative assistant of Unity, typed and translated the revised version into English. Some of the women have chosen to use their own names, and those who wished to have photographs in this book chose them. In November 2000 we had a celebration of the completed interviews. The stories that you will read here have been finally approved by the women of Unity.
