Literary Activity: Folkestone, Paris, London 1855–26 July 1859
Germs of situations, characters and ideas — later to surface in his novels — reveal themselves in his letters. A letter of 24 January 1855 notes Bentley issuing a second edition of Rambles Beyond Railways. One letter [14 February 1855] sees Wilkie enjoying himself in Paris with Charles Dickens. On his return to London Wilkie is involved with the affairs of the Garrick Club and with the production of his drama The Lighthouse. He refers in one letter [20 March 1855] to being “in doctor’s hands again”.
