Conclusion — The Future of Religion in the West

  • Stephen J. Hunt
Part of the Sociology for a Changing World book series (SCW)

This book has considered the nature, extent and consequences of contemporary religion in Western societies. It has attempted to do so by overviewing present sociological debates, by surveying contrasting theoretical frameworks and, through examining diverse forms of religiosity, discussing several principal issues pertinent to current religious belief and practice. The fact that it has engaged with so many themes is indicative of the complexity of religion in the West. Today, the sociology of religion focuses on a far wider range of concerns than merely tracing the alleged decline of religion. There are now numerous trends, intricacies and even contradictions to take on board, and all this makes it very difficult to predict the form and trajectory of religiosity in the future.
