French Women Making Films in the 1990s

  • Geneviève Sellier

Abstract

The important place held by women filmmakers in France was confirmed in the 1990s. This took place within the very unique context of a heavily subsidized film industry restricted by a government policy that obliges all television networks, both private and public, to invest in the film industry Such investments must be made in proportion to their profit margins, against the backdrop of a strict institutional separation of these two audiovisual media. This system has enabled the production of anywhere between 150 and 180 films, depending on the year, some making only a brief appearance in movie theaters before being recycled for television networks and the commercial video circuit.
