Abstract

In the outline of her short story “The Scholarship,”1 Katherine Mansfield places these words in the mouth of her hero Kenneth, her masculine double, “I’ve no desire to rush into this affair they call Life. No, my job is to hide in a doorway or to squeeze under a porch till it’s all over.” The doorway or the porch. Is this the position of the artist observing the world from within his residence? Or the position of the woman who does not stray from the family perimeter?
