How Much Have Things Changed?

  • Mary Midgley

Abstract

People who suggest that something in the modern age has radically altered this situation, are, I think, often simply forgetting the great mass of fairly simple examples of this kind, and distracting themselves by deliberately looking only at specially chosen dilemmas, such as that of Sartre’s student, which have been ingeniously constructed to appear insoluble. Both kinds of extreme case—the quite straightforward and the desperately puzzling—do occur, and have always occurred. But perhaps neither is very common.
