These voices are of course not all saying the same thing. There are deep differences between them, and some of them also have internal conflicts. We must attend to these differences in a moment. It is a central and by now familiar theme of this book that entirely distinct doctrines are often jumbled together and held as a whole to satisfy conflicting demands. But in spite of the differences it is worthwhile to start by noticing what these voices have in common.
