Asked recently how he saw the future, Matt Groenig, creator of The Simpsons and Futurama, said that the ‘future is always presented as monolithic — people all dressed in the same spandex. I think it will have far more variety than the present. In the future everything is under construction. There are lots of loose wires sticking out of the walls’ (Kelly and Groenig 1999: 116). In this chapter we will conclude by asking some questions about the variety of the future in the light of culture’s new relations to technology. In accordance with our survey approach to issues in culture and technology, we will also give accounts of some thinkers who provide guidelines for living with the virtual. Crucial to these guidelines will be a brief account of community in the increasingly networked society.
