A Better Politics

  • Adlai E. StevensonIII

Abstract

The Guv’s politics may no longer be possible. The presidential selection process has become a multiyear physical and financial endurance contest. Candidates compete in fifty state primary and caucus systems, pandering to local interests, raising money, and staging events for commercial television that trivializes “news” and tailors it to audience preferences. The federal election-year cycle is a multibillion-dollar money-raising and marketing exercise that the fittest have difficulty surviving.
