Alvin Liebling, Sr. U.S. Administrative Law Judge and editor of this volume, met Adlai E. Stevenson II in 1947 as an undergraduate at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He headed an Illinois college student campaign for Stevenson for Governor in 1948. During Adlai Stevenson’s governorship, he attended Northwestern’s Law School in Chicago where Stevenson had graduated. A number of the Governor’s associates were from that school, and as a student, he came to know many of them. Like them, his career was greatly influenced by the Governor. Starting with military service after graduation, he spent two years in the army and in the air force as an Assistant Staff Judge Advocate and advisor to its rehabilitation program. On his return to Rockford, Illinois in 1954, he became an Assistant State’s Attorney, and in 1956–58 in Washington, DC, a Special Attorney (contracts) with the U.S. Department of Justice and in Chicago, an Assistant U.S. Attorney.
