Night was falling. The sun was sinking into the sea, casting a great wide red arc of light over the calm water. The cliffs that had looked grey during the daytime were now black and their faces seemed to ooze water, a sort of perspiration that pours from them during the night. Beneath them the sea was a deep, deep blue, almost black, and the little waves never broke at all but swelled in and out murmuring. It was very beautiful, silent and dreamy.
