In our part of the country the old custom of ‘Confessions’ still survives. Twice a year the priests visit each village in the parish. Mass is said in one house in each village and all the villagers gather into that house to hear Mass and confess their sins. The appointed house in each village undergoes a thorough cleansing and renovating prior to the visit; so that, indeed, apart from the spiritual benefits accruing from it, the custom is a very good one from a sanitary point of view. As the average number of houses in each village is twenty, each house is thoroughly cleansed once every ten years. Otherwise perhaps they might never get cleansed.
