Abstract
The evidence upon which this chapter is based derives largely from English private charters of the twelfth century. Since such charters, not to mention a fair percentage of royal and episcopal ones as well, are not regularly dated until a good century and a half after the end of the Second Crusade, some of the conclusions presented here must remain tentative.
