I envision a brief volume, a history of Latin sexuality through the figure of the phallus, not unlike Michel Foucault and René Magritte’s Ceci n’est pas une pipe: a compendium of its capricious ups and downs, ins and outs, from the Argentine Pampa to the Rio Grande and the Caribbean. An essay in representation, it would begin with the intimidating genitalia of the sovereigns of courage, Hernán Cortés, Francisco Pizarro, and Spanish explorers like Hernando de Soto and Cabeza de Vaca. It would make abundant display of the often graphic art of the gay awakening of the early seventies, shameless in its depiction of the male organ. And it would conclude, perhaps, with the ribbing of feminists.
